Madeiran government says investing in agriculture is “priority” and will step up support for modernization

The Government of Madeira considers investments in agriculture “priority and essential” and will strengthen support for the modernization of the sector, the Chief Executive said on Tuesday, recalling that “food self-sufficiency is the order of the day.”

We will never be, nor can we be, self-sufficient in food production, but we must do everything possible to ensure that we produce the maximum amount of goods and products in Madeira”, said Miguel Albuquerque.

The President of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP) spoke at the award ceremony for 133 Madeiran producers and agricultural companies, in Funchal, within the scope of the Rural Development Program of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (PRODERAM).

The aid, for a total amount of 563,451 euros, is intended for small investments on farms

Miguel Albuquerque underlined that the global crisis resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine has revealed Europe’s weaknesses and its dependence on third countries in terms of agricultural, energy and industrial production.

For this reason, he affirmed that the autonomous community must invest everything possible in production of goods and productsparticularly in the agricultural sector.

For this to happen, it is very important that the new generations have the opportunity to modernize the agricultural production structure, that they have training and, above all, that they introduce the factors of modernity in their production,” he said.

The president of the Regional Government said that the executive’s strategy for the next community support framework will include the structuring of a program to “accelerate the modernization of agricultural production in Madeira.”
