Guinean Court of Appeal prevents PAIGC from holding congress

The Court of Appeal communicated this Thursday to the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) the prohibition of its X congress, which was to begin this Friday, while a lawsuit filed by a militant continues.

In the order, to which Lusa had access, Judge Aimadu Sauané informed the PAIGC that the appeal filed by the militant Bolom Conte in that instance has suspensive effectFor this reason, “the celebration of the X congress” of that party is prevented from the beginning.

Bolom Conte, who according to the PAIGC has nevertheless lost his status as a militant, appealed to the courts last March to prevent the holding of the 10th ordinary congress, alleging that he was unfairly prevented from entering the lists of delegates. The main meeting of the party headed by former Prime Minister Domingos Simões Pereira has been successively postponed since February.

The Guinean courts have already given reason for both parties.

The last decision issued by the Court of Appeals admitted an appeal filed by Conte, who did not agree with another decision of the same instance that confirmed the PAIGC and also sentenced the complainant to pay a fine.

In his appeal, Conte asks that it be declared valid with suspensive effect, as Judge Aimadu Sauané declared in his order published today in Bissau.

In another note addressed to the Ministry of the Interior, the judge asks that institution to deploy agents of the Public Order Police to “ensure the effectiveness of the judicial decision.”

The president of the organizing committee of the congress, the veteran of the fight for the country’s independence, Colonel Manecas dos Santos, said at a press conference that the great meeting start on Friday in the town of Gardeteon the outskirts of Bissau.

For us, if there is no legal impediment, there will be a congress”, declared Manecas dos Santos.

The PAIGC headquarters in Bissau is registering a large crowd of activists and congress delegates, mainly from the interior of the country.
