Registries and Notary strengthen positions for face-to-face applications for nationality

The Instituto dos Registos e Notariado (IRN) will temporarily increase the number of service posts in Lisbon and Porto to respond to the increased demand for nationality applications, the Ministry of Justice announced this Saturday.

The Government acknowledges that, last week, “there was a general increase in the number of people who went to the IRN windows to submit applications for nationality”, which caused “limitations in the capacity of the services and in the time waiting for attention”.

In response, the Justice Ministry says it will “temporarily adjust internal procedures for receiving personally submitted applications.”

In this way, the IRN strengthens its service capacity in Lisbon and Porto, with another 15 service points, including 10 rapid service points.

At the Conservatória dos Registos Centrais, starting from the second fair and until the fourth fair, there are 13 service posts available, with extended hours, between 08:00 and 18:00, two every three hours in the fast service mode (in the same time).

At the Lisbon Civil Registry, on Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., four service stations will be available, three of which are express service.

At the Arquivo Central do Porto, also from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., three quick service points will be available.

The express service stations will serve mainly for the service of professionals and will allow the delivery of nationality applications in the same way as postal delivery.

“At these counters, users will be able to submit nationality applications and the respective documents in paper format, reducing the time of each service,” explains the Ministry of Justice, in the statement.

Service at these counters is subject to the availability of tickets issued during the day, at each of the booths, and appointments already scheduled will not be affected by these changes.

The Ministry of Justice recalls that, in addition to these measures, the sending of applications and respective documents by post is still available, considering the date of sending as the delivery date for legal purposes.

The Government undertakes to evaluate the impact of these reinforcement measures, after Wednesday, August 31, to decide on the need to maintain this increase in on-site service stations.
