The president of UNITA said today that “there is evidence that it is necessary to correct the mandates”, guaranteeing that any position of the party on the result of the Angolan elections will be formally verified.
“There is evidence that mandates need to be corrected, but we haven’t finished counting. In this matter we must be calm, we must not take a position on anything that is not proven. Everything we do will be formally tested, we expect the same from the institutions and from the MPLA”, Adalberto Costa Júnior told journalists, leaving the funeral of former Angolan president José Eduardo dos Santos, today, in Luanda.
According to the leader of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), complaints were filed with the provincial electoral commissions in cases where “the results are not in agreement.”
“I think that’s why the CNE spokesman said yesterday that they would review the mandates,” he continued.
On Saturday, the spokesman for the National Electoral Commission (CNE) told the journalist that the reports of votes claimed at the level of the provincial electoral boards were being analyzed and only after all the information would there be definitive results.
“It is always possible that, depending on the magnitude of the number of votes claimed, there will be some changes,” he said.
UNITA on Friday contested a possible victory by the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and is conducting a parallel vote count, based on summary records from the country’s 18 provinces.
“We are working with the minutes of the CNE, the CNE may eventually refuse to review the mandates, but I don’t think it will,” the UNITA leader emphasized, noting that the CNE spokesman stated that he would verify and assume any possible correction of the same. mandates
“The data we have gives us many more mandates and these are obviously going to be withdrawn from the MPLA, our quota has not ended,” he stressed, recalling that the data that is known so far is the data from the CNE.
“We are calm, doing what we have to do and we can only hope that the vote cast in the polls is scrupulously respected,” the leader stressed.
Adalberto Costa Júnior also stated that he will be satisfied with the results of the minutes.
“From the moment we agree to participate in the game, we will have to adjust to what the minutes tell us, we will have to stick to the results that the minutes give us,” he guaranteed.
According to data released by the CNE, when 97.03% of the votes were counted in the elections held last Wednesday, the MPLA, in power since 1975, obtained 3,162,801 votes, one million ballots counted less than in 2017 , when he obtained 4,115,302 votes.
UNITA, for its part, registered a large increase, electing deputies in 17 of the 18 provinces and obtaining a historic victory in Luanda, the country’s largest province, obtaining 2,727,885 votes so far, while in 2017 it obtained 1,800,860. favorable votes.
However, UNITA’s leader on Friday questioned the MPLA’s victory and called for an international commission to compare the party’s electoral records with those of the CNE.
