Lower VAT on gas like Spain? “Measures must be agreed at the European level,” warns Marcelo

At a time when concerns about the effects of inflation and rising prices are mounting, with several European governments —including the Portuguese— preparing packages of mitigation measures, the President of the Republic issues an alert: the measures, especially those that apply to energy must be “fixed” at the European level so as not to create more inequalities.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was speaking to journalists after leaving the Estoril Conference, minutes after learning of the Spanish government’s decision to lower VAT on gas from 21% to 5%, in an attempt to lower prices on the final bill. The president was cautious: if it is true that “at this time, in all countries, a set of measures must be considered”, it is also true that “the ideal would be for it to be agreed at a European level, if inequalities persist”. not increase”.
