The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, considered this Wednesday, regarding the payments to pensioners announced by the Government, that the basis for calculating future pensions “is the problem.”
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who was answering questions from journalists in a hotel in Brasilia, stressed, however, that this matter will continue to be debated in the Assembly of the Republic.
According to the head of state, “there are two realities” take into account and the first is “to know if, yes or no, it is possible to break down what the increase would be for next year” to anticipate, given the difficult situation that many Portuguese live, a part of the payment”.
Another thing, which is what worries people, is to know later what the calculation base is” for the future, he continued, considering that “this is the problem: if it is only what is half of the total or if it is the cake”. total”.
The President of the Republic stressed that “this issue will still be discussed” in Parliament, which will decide on the bill by which the Government proposes “increases in pensions, in 2023, of 4.43% for pensions up to €886in 4.07% for pensions between 886 and 2,659 euros; It is 3.53% for other pensions subject to updating”.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa pointed out that “a preliminary debate” is already underway on this issue, which “inevitably” will be discussed again when the State Budget is presented: “Therefore, we still have three moments of discussion on this.”
According to the President of the Government, António Costa, if the legal formula were applied, the increases in pensions in 2023 would be 7.1% and 8%but no pensioner will be harmed in their income next year, thanks to the extraordinary supplement that they will receive in October, equivalent to half a month of pension.
