Save on Christmas lights, air conditioning and swimming pools. The presentation of the government plan was postponed, but the minister gave clues

The presentation of a National Energy Saving Plan was expected, but only the general lines were advanced. According to the Minister of the Environment, Duarte Cordeiro, the measures will be known “soon”, since the plan that was passed to the Council of Ministers, despite having been approved, was modified during the meeting. “We hope to make the plan public as soon as all these changes are accommodated,” said Duarte Cordeiro.

The changes, replied the minister, are due to the fact that the Council of Ministers is “participatory”. “These are measures that influence public administration, local administration, economic sectors. The members of the Government suggest changes and the proposing ministers have to match the final result of the plan with the proposals that are made”, he declared at the press conference that followed the meeting. In practice, some measures that were planned will become awareness campaigns. “In terms of mobility, for example, instead of impositions, there will be awareness campaigns. There will be a reformulation of what we had planned and then we will make a presentation”, summarized the minister.

The plan has three dimensions: one for the public administration, of obligatory application, and the other two, voluntary, for the local administration and for the private sector. Measures will be taken to reduce electricity consumption when the establishments are not operational and the reduction of decorative lights after 24.00 hours, already thinking about Christmas, admitted the minister. They can exist, but they must be turned off at a certain time.
