On August 30, Breitbart News reported that New York lawmakers are urging major credit card companies to create a new firearms category code that would effectively label state and national gun purchases.
Gothamist reports that lawmakers sent a letter to credit card companies urging American Express and Mastercard to remove gun purchases from a broad tracking category such as durable goods or others, and put them in a new category specifically related to firearms. or gun shops.
Gothamist sums it up:
If credit cards are encoded for gun shop purchases, the same laws allow them to keep track of whether someone is spending large sums of money at a dealer or visiting more than one gun shop in a short amount of time. It could ultimately help law enforcement stop crimes like arms trafficking and even prevent mass shootings, lawmakers say.
Pressure from Hole and New York State Democrats, gun control group Gabby Giffords, follows Giffords’ call to Visa, Mastercard and American Express to label their firearms and ammunition purchases.
