The plenary sessions return to Parliament with inflation dominating the debates of the week

The plenary sessions return to Parliament this Wednesday after the holiday recess, in a week that should be dominated by debates on combating inflation, with emphasis on government measures, particularly those related to pensions.

After last week’s debate with the Government in the Permanent Commission -a body that works during the vacation recess-, this Wednesday the Assembly of the Republic returns to full operation with the return of the plenary sessions.

Scheduled for 3pm, the plenary session begins with a period of political statements, followed by a debate on Enough’s proposals to create two commissions of inquiry. One on the credibility of the Government’s annual security reports and another to clarify the causes of mortality in 2020 and 2021. A Government proposal on international cooperation in security matters will also be discussed.

The debates continue on Thursday, the day on which the PSD’s social emergency program will be discussed and, the next day, it will be the turn of the Government’s proposal for social support for families, in a context of high inflation.

This bill determines “the income update coefficient for 2023, creates extraordinary support for leasing, reduces VAT on electricity supply” from 13 to 6% and establishes a transitory pension update regime, which will apply from January of next year.

The PSD has already requested the parliamentary appreciation of the Government diploma that establishes exceptional measures to support families to mitigate the effects of inflation -which includes, among other measures, an exceptional supplement to pensioners equivalent to the half pension paid in October- and it was justified by the decision. Request for considering that it constitutes “a political deception” for pensioners, when combined with the bill that will change pension increases in 2023 and will be debated in Parliament.

Friday morning’s agenda ends with regimental votes.

Before the vacation recess, some more controversial files were interrupted, among them, the Basta resolution condemning the conduct of the president of Parliament, Augusto Santos Silva.

This Wednesday, the presentation by the sole deputy of the PAN, Inês Sousa Real, to the Constitutional Affairs Commission of the opinion on the admissibility of the Chega initiative, was scheduled, but it was postponed at the request of the deputy.

The writing of the opinion was attributed to the PAN after the PSD asked for an excuse to do so, refusing to feed any political “folklore”, and the Liberal Initiative also refused to “do the work that the PSD should do”. .
