The President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, will raise the flag of the European Union this Wednesday, which will be raised in Parliament, preceded by the national flag, by deliberation approved on July 21.

The deliberation was then approved with the favorable votes of the PS, PSD, Liberal Initiative, PAN and Livre, with the PCP voting against, the Bloco de Esquerda abstaining and Chega absent.
The ceremony is scheduled for 2:40 p.m., before the start of the plenary meeting, and will be attended by the Deputy Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Ana Catarina Mendes, the Secretary of State for European Affairs, Tiago Antunes, and two vice-presidents of Assembly of the Republic.
The presence of the leaders of the parliamentary groups, the sole deputies of the PAN and Livre, the president of the European Affairs Committee, among other deputies, is also planned.
In accordance with the protocol of the ceremony, Augusto Santos Silva, outside the São Bento Palace, first attends to the honor guard, then ascends the noble staircase to the balcony of the São Bento Palace, where the flag of the European Union will be hoisted .
According to the approved deliberation, the flag of the European Union is hoisted outside the São Bento Palace “during the period of the legislative session and on parliamentary days”.
“The flag of the European Union is preceded by the national flag and precedes the flag of the Assembly of the Republic”, reads the deliberation approved last July and which was signed by the former Minister of State and Foreign Affairs.
In his official speeches, especially regarding foreign relations, Augusto Santos Silva, a PS deputy elected by one of the emigration circles, wanted to underline the importance of Portugal’s participation in the European Union.
