Defense minister says cybersecurity is “of paramount importance” and follows investigations of cyberattacks

The Minister of Defense, Helena Carreiras, described this Wednesday the issue of cybersecurity as “of the greatest importance” and assured that the Ministry will continue to collaborate with the ongoing investigations into the case of the cyberattack against the General Staff of the Armed Forces. .

“It’s an issue of the utmost importance and, naturally, we follow it very carefully,” responded Helena Carreiras, when asked about the cyberattack in which classified NATO documents were extracted and put up for sale on the ‘darkWeb’, which has already led to the opening by the Audience Ministry of an investigation.

“Due to the sensitivity to confidentiality that this issue requires, I cannot say more than that the Ministry of Defense has given all the collaboration, and naturally will continue to do so, so that this matter is completely clarified,” he declared.

The minister, who was responding to a joint press conference with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, and his Spanish counterparts, referred to the collaboration with the ongoing investigation “by the responsible entity, which is the Office of National security”. .

“We have to wait for these inquiries to be made and for these investigations to be carried out, in a complete, deep way,” he said, also pointing out the investigation opened by the Public Ministry and that it is “very important to have the conclusions of these investigations.”

The Public Ministry revealed on Tuesday that it opened an investigation linked to the cyberattack against the General Staff of the Armed Forces in which classified NATO documents were extracted and put up for sale on the ‘darkWeb’.

“The investigation is confirmed. It is directed by the Public Ministry of the Central Directorate of Investigation and Criminal Action (DCIAP) “, specified the Attorney General’s Office, in response to the Lusa agency.

The minister also responded to a question about the incident in the context of the Commando Course, saying that she is following up on the situation of the hospitalized soldier, who was transplanted at the Curry Cabral Hospital and whose clinical condition “continues to evolve favorably.”

“There was an urgent investigation process started, there was also an extraordinary technical inspection of the course itself and the course was suspended until we have the results,” recalled the minister, who stressed that she is following “the situation of the military very closely” and that this is his biggest concern right now.”

Helena Carreiras was speaking at the end of a joint meeting of the Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs of Portugal and Spain, aimed at reflecting on matters of common strategic interest.
