The president of the Liberal Initiative (IL), João Cotrim Figueiredo, defended this Saturday that the new director of the National Health Service (SNS) will “empty functions” from the Ministry of Health, which is a cause for concern.
“We wish Dr. Fernando Araújo luck. Now, if he fulfills his functions, as he intends to fulfill them, he will empty the Ministry of Health of its functions. Either we have an executive director of the SNS or we have a Minister of Health”, defended João Cotrim Figueiredo.
The IL leader, who started the Liberal Routes in Viseu this Saturday, which take him to visit the district for three days, told reporters that “it is not clear which of the two will be left behind at the end of this process and that is something that worries” the party.
“Because the health of the Portuguese would only be effectively resolved if the profound reform that the Liberal Initiative has been advocating for a long time is carried out,” added João Cotrim Figueiredo.
This official reacted in this way to the Government’s announcement, this Friday, of Fernando Araújo as executive director of the SNS, a man who, in his opinion, “has a resume that speaks for itself” and, therefore, “is a good choice” . ”.
In that sense, he said that “now the rest is missing”, because “there are no providential men who, within the framework of an organization of a national health system that is not good, can perform miracles”, he pointed out.
João Cotrim Figueiredo also assumed that the structure also announced this Friday “is confusing” and, as IL had already warned, either it was very clear what the powers are or there will be a clash of powers”.
Not among the organizations that have just been announced, he continued, “but among those that already existed, such as the ACSS, the ARS, the DGS itself, therefore, there are a series of overlapping powers.”
“What IL warned would happen is happening. Confusion installed in the way of designing the model, we still wish Dr. Fernando Araújo luck”, he underlined.
This, he added, “because within a new statute of the SNS there is the possibility of the institution of what is called local health systems”, which João Cotrim Figueiredo hopes the new executive director of the SNS will prove.
“Wait, [que] Dr. Fernando Araújo demonstrates that he is capable of attracting not only public health providers, but also private and social health providers who also work in many parts of the territory, to solve local health problems”, he assumed.
