The Lisbon PCP filed a complaint considering that the removal, by the Lisbon Chamber, of the political propaganda posters of the Marquis of Pombal “violates the political right of citizens and democratic legality”, it was announced this Tuesday.
In a note, the Lisbon PCP considered that “the act of removing political posters from Praça Marquês de Pombal by the CML [Câmara Municipal de Lisboa]In addition to the manifest expression of anti-democratic conceptions and the abuse of power that in itself constitutes, intends to divert the attention of the people of Lisbon from the various problems of the city to which the CML does not respond“.
“It is an arbitrary and reprehensible act, which goes beyond the powers of the autarchy, undermines freedom of expression, the law and the Constitution of the Republic. The PCP presented yesterday [segunda-feira] complaint before the Department of Investigation and Criminal Action of an act that violates the right to propaganda and that violates the political rights of citizens and democratic legality, “he added.
A week ago, the municipality eliminated the last outdoor (including the supports), existing in the Praça Marquês de Pombal, with posters of four entities that did not comply with the notification of their withdrawal: the MUDAR movement and the PAN, PCP and Nós, Cidadãos!.

Earlier, in statements to the Lusa agency, Carlos Moedas had warned that he wanted to end “total impunity” regarding the cartels installed in the Marquês in recent years, provoking criticism from various parties, including the PCP.
On Monday, during the Period Before the Agenda of the Day (PAOD) of the public meeting of the Lisbon Chamber, Mayor Carlos Moedas was accused by the PCP councilor João Ferreira of having committed a crime by withdrawing the outdoor politicians
“Illegally eliminated the support structures of the Marquês de Pombal. This attitude violates freedom of expression and constitutes the crime of damage to propaganda structures,” said the communist councilman, arguing that the municipality “had no jurisdiction to do so.”
In response to the communist councilman, Carlos Moedas assured that he would withdraw the outdoor of the Praça de Marquês de Pombal and challenged the PCP to file a criminal complaint if they so wished.
