João Cotrim Figueiredo will remain a deputy in the Assembly of the Republic after leaving the leadership of the Liberal Initiative in December. In a brief interview with the Observer the day he announced he is stepping down from the IL presidency, the Liberal president makes himself available to remain in office, contribute to the party, and even considers himself a candidate for vice-president of Parliament — since this is a “ political decision” (and not personal) that is in the hands of the next leadership.
“I’ll stay IL deputy and I will contribute to the party in any way that the new leadership thinks I can help the party”, says João Cotrim Figueiredo in an interview with the Observer the day he announced his departure from the leadership. Asked about a re-candidacy for the vice-presidency (which the liberal’s name failed), Cotrim considers that a “political problem antecedents”, remembering the deputies who vetoed it [muitos do PSD] that they didn’t admit they were wrong, and points to the future: “If the new leadership thinks it’s an important issue, I will be able to reflect.”
It was with “lucidity” and “strategic sense” that Cotrim Figueiredo made the decision to leave the party, despite admitting that “it is not an easy decision”, but because he is “convinced” that it is “the best decision for the party”.
