The prime minister highlighted this Friday, after a meeting with the president of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, the “particularly dynamic” moment in terms of bilateral relations as a result of the recent strategic association signed between the two countries.
The meeting in Lisbon with the President of the Republic of Mozambique, two months after our summit in Maputo, takes place at a particularly dynamic moment in our bilateral relationship, thanks to the commitment and dynamism of our integral and strategic partnership”, wrote António Costa on his account on the social network Twitter.
Filipe Nyusi arrived at the official residence of the prime minister, in São Bento, at 6:07 p.m., was greeted with a hug by António Costa right at the entrance and then greeted various members of the Portuguese government.
Several members of the Portuguese Government attended the reception for the Mozambican Head of State: the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, of Economy, António Costa Silva, of Culture, Pedro Adão e Silva, of Justice, Catarina Sarmento e Castro, and of Agriculture, Maria do Céu Antunes.
Earlier, the Mozambican head of state met with the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in Belém, where he also met with the President-elect of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The meeting between Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Mozambican president, and Lula da Silva was not scheduled. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa first received Filipe Nyusi, at 3:00 p.m., and then went to receive Lula da Silva, at 5:00 p.m.
However, the meeting with Filipe Nyusi was prolonged, Lula da Silva arrived some 20 minutes before the scheduled time, and the journalists present at the venue were told that the three would meet.
In the Sala das Bicas of the Belém Palace, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Filipe Nyusi and Lula da Silva posed for a few moments in front of the image reporters, the three greeted each other by shaking hands, before meeting.
The Prime Minister was in Mozambique on September 1 and 2, on the occasion of the Portuguese-Mozambican summit, where, before Filipe Nyusi, he apologized for the Wiriyamu massacre, which he described as an “unforgivable act that dishonors” the history of Portugal.
In a balance of his two-day official visit to Maputo, he highlighted the “great harmony and political will” of the two countries to strengthen cooperation.
“I think this summit was frankly positive across the board. From the political point of view, in fact there is great harmony and political will to strengthen cooperation between the two governments”, said António Costa.
The prime minister also expressed Portugal’s readiness to send more equipment to help the Mozambique Armed Forces in the fight against terrorism.
