The former leader of the CDS/PP in the Azores, Alvarino Pinheiro, dies

The former leader of the CDS-PP/Azores Alvarino Pinheiro, a PSD dissident and regional deputy, died this Sunday on Terceira Island at the age of 72, and the president of the Government of the Azores stressed that he “greatly honored” autonomy.

“It is with sadness that we receive the news of the death of Dr. Alvarino Pinheiro. He was an example of a man of convictions who dedicated himself to the public cause, as a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores and leader of the CDS-PP ”, says José Manuel Bolieiro in a note published on the Government website from the Azores.

According to the president of the Regional Government, Alvarino Pinheiro was “a brilliant parliamentarian who gave great prestige to the Azores parliament in the affirmation of democratic autonomy, during the different legislatures that he held, representing his native island, the Third, and in favor of of the development and cohesion of the archipelago”.

“We had the opportunity to work with Dr. Alvarino Pinheiro and to witness the brilliance of the parliamentarian, the man of eloquent word and astute reasoning, cordial in relations with his peers, regardless of the difference in ideologies and party options. The Azoreans have in Dr. Alvarino Pinheiro a reference of the intelligent man, convinced autonomist and champion of the values ​​of Christian democracy, says José Manuel Bolieiro.

Artur Lima, president of the CDS-PP Azores, and current vice president of the Government of the Azores, considered that Alvarino Pinheiro “leaves an indelible mark on Azorean politics.”

“He was an outstanding leader of the CDS-PP, having held functions, among many others, as Vice President of the Regional Legislative Assembly and President of the Municipal Assembly of Praia da Vitória. He was undoubtedly a great autonomist, ”said Artur Lima.

Former centrist leader Paulo Portas considered that Alvarino Pinheiro “was one of the most brilliant politicians” he met and stated that “he will always be indebted to the sustained and friendly support he gave him during 16 years of presidency of the national CDS.”

“Alvarino was an exceptional man: deep in the analysis of the problems, open to all in his way of directing, endowed with an enthusiastic sense of humor and always, always with a sense of State and love for the Azores”, concludes Paulo Portas in a statement sent to Lusa.

Born on April 22, 1950 in the parish of Santa Cruz, in the municipality of Praia da Vitória, on Terceira Island, Alvarino Pinheiro was one of the founders of PSD-Azores, but ended up on a collision course with Mota Amaral, more later joining the CDS-PP, a party that he led for several years after joining in 1992, until he abandoned active politics.

He was regional and insular leader of the PSD/Azores, from 1975 to 1983, he joined the CDS in 1992, having been president of the CDS/PP Azores Regional Board of Directors since 1996, president of the CDS/PP Azores Regional Political Commission since 1998 and president of the Terceira Island Political Commission of the CDS/PP since 1993.

Alvarino Pinheiro was also a member of the CDS/PP National Executive Committee since 1999, a member of the CDS/PP National Political Committee since 1998 and a CDS/PP national adviser since 1992, having been Vice President of the CDS/PP PP National Congress since September from 2003.

He was a member of the Regional Legislative Assembly of the Azores since 1976, of which he was vice president and president of the CDS-PP parliamentary group, professor, and economic and financial consultant.
