Due to this policy, according to the same project, local authorities “end up implementing highly repressive quarantines, closing buildings, either homes or workplaceswelding or closing doors and forcing people to live in subhuman conditions for weeks, if not months, as was already the case in the city of Urumqi.”

“Popular discontent exceeded the response to the covid-zero policy, reaching cries of protest for the institution of freedom of expression, defending freedom and the rule of law in China, some displaying white sheets in protest of the repression and censorship imposed by the Chinese Communist Party, which still exists and intensified with the protests”, he reports.

The country’s regime, according to liberals, “has been responsible for some of today’s biggest mass atrocities, specifically in Xinjiang province – where many of the current protests are springing up – and has shown a systematic disrespect for the rights, freedoms and guarantees not only citizens of Tibet, Xinjiang or Hong Kong, where freedom prevailed until the approval of the Extradition Law in 2019.”

Therefore, IL wants the Portuguese parliament to demonstrate “its solidarity with the protesters for freedom, democracy and the rule of law in the PRC.”
