Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa assured this morning that he will not use the “atomic bomb” to dissolve the Assembly of the Republic, considering that this would have “many more disadvantages than advantages” for the country. Marcelo says that “there is no obvious, strong and immediate alternative” and that what is needed is for “the PS to govern” with “stability”.
“Without a clear absolute majority of alternatives, the atomic bomb cannot be resorted to every 8 months. It is not clear that there would be an obvious, strong and immediate alternative to the one that exists in the Government. Experimentalism is not the best for the health of democracies”, said the President of the Republic, before leaving for Brazil, where he will participate in the inauguration of Lula da Silva.
Also exerting pressure on the opposition, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa says that “there is no clear absolute majority of alternative” and showed that he also considered the possibility of using the atomic bomb, but foreseeing a result in which “the Portuguese people confirm the absolute most”.
“Using the atomic bomb means stopping the country for three months. At this point, it is preferable for the Government to govern effectively, and getting better, than to be interrupting Portuguese political life for 3, 4 months at a very sensitive time. Since there is not a clear absolute majority of alternatives, it cannot be resorting to the atomic bomb every 8 months”, said the President.
Dismissal of Pedro Nuno Santos. “No one is forced to stay in the Government,” says Marcelo
Speaking for the first time about the resignation of the Minister of Infrastructure, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa limited himself to saying that “no one is forced to stay in the Government.”
“When someone resigns from government, it is because they understand that they do not have political conditions. No one can be detained while they remain in the Government”, said the President of the Republic in statements to journalists before leaving for Brazil.
Regarding the relay, which will only take place next year, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa says that it is “fundamental to see when it is” and “what is the solution for the relay.”
Even before boarding, Marcelo puts pressure on Costa again: “It is essential that 2023 be a good year for the Portuguese, that depends on all of us and a lot on the Government”.
