The PCP questioned Minister Paulo Rangel about the visit of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel, questioning the objectives and implications of the meetings and events held in the country.
The PCP questioned the Government this Thursday about a meeting between the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and an Israeli deputy minister, criticizing its holding at a time when Tel Aviv is accused of violating international law.
In a question addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, through the Assembly of the Republicthe parliamentary leader of the PCP, Paula Santos, states that, “on social media pages associated with the Israeli diplomatic representation in Portugal, it was reported, on November 20, that holding a meeting between the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel and the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Portuguese Government”.
“According to these publications, the meeting took place that same day, within the framework of the trip to Portugal by the head of the Government of Israel, supposedly the first official visit made since he took office,” highlights the PCP.
The party emphasizes that, on the same occasion, “and always according to the pages linked to the Israeli diplomatic representation in Portugal, The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel participated in an event at the Assembly of the Republic for the creation of the Portuguese representation of the ‘Israel Allies Foundation’an Israeli lobby organization linked to the far right in that country.”
The PCP indicates that, according to the same sources, this representation will be headed in Portugal by the PSD deputy Liliana Reis and the Chega deputy Pedro Frazão, adding that this was also reported by the Israeli press.
“For more than a year, Israel has been carrying out brutal military actions in the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967. that, according to the International Court of Justice, may involve the commission of the crime of genocide, in such a way that, on two occasions, on January 26 and March 28, 2024, it determined provisional measures of mandatory application for all parties involved,” he says.
The PCP also highlights that, more recently, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), “following an opinion issued by the same court, approved a resolution that considers illegal the occupation of the Palestinian territories illegally occupied by Israel in 1967 and urges “States must assume their responsibilities, that is, refrain from any measure or initiative that contributes to the prolongation of that occupation.”
In this context, the The PCP asks Paulo Rangel “what is the scope of the visit to Portugal by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel.”
“What is the objective of the meeting between a representative of the Portuguese Government and this political leader of the Government of Israel, taking into account the serious accusations against that State in international organizations and its repeated practice of disrespect and defiance of international law and to international law? Finally, the PCP also wants to know how the Government values ”the presence of the deputy minister of Israel at a ceremony held in the Assembly of the Republic for the creation of an association aimed at influencing Portugal’s foreign policy in a manner favorable to the interests of Israel.”
