South Korea’s presidential office said President Yoon Seok-yeol had given the green light to host the 2023 Asian Cup, weeks after China decided to relinquish the right to host the tournament.

The country’s president and sports minister met with footballers and officials ahead of the national team’s friendly match against Brazil on Thursday, and made the decision, according to press sources, at the suggestion of South Korea Football Association president Chung Mong | -gyu to qualify for hosting after the AFC opens the doors for all countries to submit their files.

China has withdrawn their bid to host the 2023 Asian Cup due to the spread of the Corona virus in the country.

The South Korean federation could compete with its Japanese counterpart, which is also examining the possibility of hosting.

South Korea has not hosted an Asian Cup final since it first hosted it in 1960 when its country’s team won the title.
