According to local media reports, an Algerian court sentenced Algerian football star Rabah Madjer to six months in prison for making “false statements”.

Mayer, who owns two newspapers (Al-Balag and Al-Balag al-Riyadi), has been accused of continuing to receive banking revenue from public advertising for a year after the closure of the two newspapers.

Mayer denied the verdict and declared himself innocent in an interview with Agence France-Presse, adding that he had nothing to do with the case being “near or far” and that he would appeal the verdict.

In addition to making false statements, Mayer was also charged with forgery and fraud, but these were later dropped.

Madger is known for scoring a goal for Porto in the 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the final of the European Cup (the old name for the European Champions League tournament) in 1987 with the heel of his foot, and scored also a decisive goal for his country in a 2–1 win over West Germany in the 1982 World Cup and also coached his country’s national team.
