Olympic tennis champion Monica Puig from Puerto Rico announced her retirement due to injury.

Puig, 28, wrote on Instagram: “Today I announce my retirement from tennis. After three years of struggling with injuries and four surgeries, this was enough for my body.”
She added: “It’s not an easy decision because I wanted to retire of my own accord, but sometimes life has other plans.”

Puig said she will remain in the world of tennis, but in the family of the sports network ESPN.

Puig was the first Puerto Rican to win Olympic gold when she won the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics when she was 22. However, she missed the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to injury.

Puig achieved her best position in the WTA rankings, finishing 27th.
