Dallas is a big city, but when it comes to football teams, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones thinks the two are too much.
In May, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson tweeted about the size of his sprawling city, which he believes makes “Big D” a worthy location for the NFL’s next franchise expansion.
“We are about to cross the Chicago subway and become subway number 3 in the USA, which makes us the largest subway in the USA WITHOUT 2 crews. Football reigns here. Dallas needs an expansion team and we can support 2,” Johnson said. “So if a deal can be reached that will benefit the NFL, the other owners, the city of Dallas, and maybe the Cowboys, that’s fine. But here’s the trick: if it’s going to benefit all the stakeholders I just mentioned, except Jerry Jones, that doesn’t mean the deal won’t/shouldn’t be made. “I’m not sure, and it’s my job as mayor to ask such questions when my city and its people can benefit. I’m both a sports fan and a Dallas fan. If Los Angeles and New York can support the NFC and AFC teams, then the football capital Dallas certainly can!
According to Johnson’s plan, the hypothetical expansion franchise will play its games within the Dallas city limits. Unlike sharing the stadium with the Cowboys in Arlington. Johnson also revealed that he thinks Jerry Jones shouldn’t be afraid of the NFL’s second team in Dallas.

“Jerry Jones has the jewel of the NFL,” Johnson said on Twitter. “I don’t think the Lakers or Yankees are worried about having the Clippers or the Mets. The Cowboys are a stronger brand with a larger global fan base than either of those two brands. You’re underestimating Jerry Jones and DALLAS!
In an interview with Calvin Watkins Dallas Morning NewsJones opposed the idea of two mayoral teams, arguing that another franchise would “degrade” the value the Cowboys brought to the region and the NFL.

“Well, I want the mayor,” Jones told Watkins. “I personally like it but it lacks depth. He had no idea what others had about the weird Dallas and how much we loved the attention to the Cowboys. He doesn’t want to dilute it because if he knows a lot and spends a lot of time in sports like me, he’ll be fine in Dallas.”
Jones argued that the mayor need not worry about adding another team. The NFL won’t allow it.
“Right,” said Jones. “True. . . . you can bet that the NFL won’t support another team because of the amount the game and the NFL have. [the] Dallas Cowboys are one of the best teams and again logic tells you [the NFL] I don’t want to dilute it. ”
Jones is one of the NFL’s oldest and strongest owners and the leader of the wealthiest franchise in professional sports, valued at $6.5 billion. As such, it’s safe to say that it will persuade other owners to block out putting another franchise in their backyard.
