Mercedes arrived at the Canadian Grand Prix with a new floor design that allows for a second iron bar to connect the floor to the chassis. This rod helps reinforce the floor and reduce vehicle sway. Teams are allowed to put a second pull on a car after the FIA has issued new fail recommendations. But the rest of the F1 teams have expressed their surprise at how Mercedes managed to design such a thing so quickly since the instructions were released last Thursday. Alpine team manager Otmar Szafnauer said: “We don’t have it because the instructions were released on Thursday. To take advantage of this advantage of one team is unfair to other teams. For his part, Williams president Yost Capito said, “You can’t design something like this in two days.”
For their part, the Mercedes team decided not to use the second pivot for fear of objections to the teams and this could subject him to a points deduction he could score in the race.
