The German website “welt” found that “German Chancellor Olaf Schulz delivered a secret message to Ukraine regarding its accession to the European Union during his visit to Kyiv,” noting that “while French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Macron are speaking in Italian, Mario Draghi on the path that has now begun for Kyiv, Schultz speaks of a path full of demands.”

According to the website, the chancellor believes that Ukraine must change in order to be accepted into the European Union: “fighting corruption, building an effective rule of law and liberalizing the economy.” In his opinion, the EU itself still needs to be changed; in the introduction of the majority principle for making important decisions, and not in the current consensus. The article concludes that the Chancellor does not make false promises to Ukraine.

Earlier, the European Commission recommended granting Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidates for EU membership. EU leaders will make a final decision on June 23-24.
