FIFPro advises against signing for clubs from seven countries for “systematic contractual breach”

There are seven: Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Romania, Libya, China, Algeria and Greece. In a statement, FIFPro discouraged footballers from signing for clubs from these countries, with the detail that concern about the Greek situation only affects the country’s second division. The reason? The “systematic and generalized breach of contract”.

In the note, the International Federation of Professional Soccer Players Associations details the realities detected in each of these countries and why it is risky for a player to sign a contract with Turkish, Arab, Romanian, Libyan, Chinese, Algerian or Greek clubs. “In Romania and Turkey, contractual violations by various clubs, including non-payment of wages, remain a long-standing and recurring problem. The high number of Romanian clubs initiating insolvency proceedings continues to have serious consequences for the players, pushing them into endless processes with little or no possibility of obtaining compensation. The second league of Greece.

“In the second league in Greece, clubs often close their doors without paying their debts. In the last two years, Greece was the country with the highest number of players who sought to obtain part of their arrears through the FIFA Player Protection Fund”, adds FIFPro, then turning to the other countries. “Unpaid wages is also a recurring problem in Algeria, China and Saudi Arabia. As far as Libya is concerned, FIFPro is very concerned about the growing number of foreign players who are stranded in the country because their clubs refuse to provide the necessary documentation for them to leave”, ends the note, which also advises each athlete who has “concerns or questions” to contact FIFPro or the respective national union.

Right now, Portugal has 20 players playing in these seven countries: 11 in Turkey (Miguel Crespo, Gedson Fernandes, Bruma, Kévin Rodrigues, Carlos Mané, Miguel Cardoso, Pedrinho, Daniel Candeias, Marafona, Bruno Paz and Diogo Sousa), one in Saudi Arabia (Éder), six in Romania (Ricardinho, André Duarte, Marian Huja, Hugo Sousa, Fábio Vianna and Jucie Lupeta), and three in the Greek second league (Ricardo Vaz, Braima Candé and Tiago Nani).
