July 20 (UPI) – Charles Johnson, 17th overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft, who played five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and teamed up with Tom Brady to win the Super Bowl, dies. 50 years old.
Sources told ABC 11 and CBS 17 of Johnson’s death on Tuesday, but no reason was given. Heritage High School in Wake Forest, North Carolina, where Johnson worked as assistant athletic director, confirmed his death in several social media posts.
Johnson also played for the Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills during his nine-year NFL career. He won a Super Bowl ring with Brady and the Patriots in 2002.
Johnson had one of his best seasons for the Steelers in 1996, when he scored 60 catches for 1,008 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games. He scored seven goals with the Steelers in 1998 and the Eagles in 2000.
He has 4,606 yards in 133 career games and 24 touchdowns on 354 catches.
