PS points out that new social support will respond to the increase in housing credit

The parliamentary leader of the PS indicated this Thursday that the new social and business support designed by the Government for September will respond to the impact derived from the increase in interest rates, especially in housing loans.

This position was conveyed by Eurico Brilhante Dias at a press conference at the end of the meeting of the PS Parliamentary Group, after being confronted with the decision of the European Central Bank (ECB) to increase its three key interest rates by 50 basis points, the first will increase in 11 years, with the aim of curbing inflation.

The ECB raises interest rates by 50 points. Inflation will remain “undesirably high.” Program for debt with conditions and the ECB hopes not to use it

Before the journalists, Eurico Brilhante Dias began by distinguishing the ECB’s reference rates and the Euribor rates formed in the interbank market, which are directly related, for example, to mortgage loans.

“It must be said that part of this move to raise reference rates by the ECB has already been accommodated by the interbank rates themselves. That’s why, no mechanical effect can be expected between the rise in the ECB’s reference rates and an effect on people’s housing endowment,” said the president of the PS Parliamentary Group.

For Eurico Brilhante Dias, the interest rates on housing loans have been increasing, although “at values that are still particularly low compared to the historical period.”

“But this will have an effect on the Portuguese stock market, and it will most likely have an effect in the second half of the year. This greater effect in the second half of the year will occur practically simultaneously with the set of measures that the Government will present in September”, he said.

In this sense, the leader of the socialist caucus considered that “the Government is very attentive to the inflationary processwhich in this case will also have some impact on home loans.”

Regarding the new measures to support families to deal with inflation, which the President of the Government, António Costa, announced this Wednesday that they will be taken in September, the parliamentary leader of the PS said that, from the budgetary point of view , his caucus will have four priorities: Fiscal justice and the fight against tax evasion; support the middle class and youth; stimulation of business development; and a package more focused on social and territorial cohesion policies.

There are four areas that were very important in the State Budgets for 2022. The PS is not expected to present major budget changes, but we want to leave our mark. Those are our four priority areas and the signals we are making have to do with the political brand of a political force guided by socialism, social democracy, committed to fiscal, social and territorial justice”, he added.
