HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Texans rookie wide receiver John Metchi III announced Sunday that he’s been diagnosed with a form of leukemia.
In a statement posted on the Texans’ Twitter account, Metchi said he was being treated for acute promyelocytic leukemia, “the most treatable form”, and is expected to “get better at some point.”
“I probably won’t be playing football this season because of this diagnosis,” Metchi said. “My main focus is my health and recovery. … I can’t wait to come back stronger than ever.”
Metchi finished 44th overall in the first round of Alabama’s draft this year, where he received 96 receptions for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns with the Crimson Tide last season. He tore his left cruciate ligament during the SEC Conference Championship game. He received 55 receptions for 916 yards in 2020.
