This year’s British Open champion Cameron Smith will reportedly join at least a dozen other golfers to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational series.
There have been reports from Australian golfer Cameron Percy that Smith is leaving soon.
After his successful performance at the British Open last month, Smith was shocked when asked if he would join the new league.
“I just won the British Open and you ask? I don’t think that’s good,” Smith said.
Under pressure, Smith continued to avoid.
– I don’t know, man. My team around me is worried about all this. I’m here to win golf tournaments,” Smith said.
It’s unlikely that Smith was the only Australian to jump ship. Percy told Australian radio that Mark Leishman would also be leaving.
[It’s] unfortunately yes, they’re gone,” said Percy.
“I’ve been talking to Adam Scott for a long time and he’s interested in talking about him, right where he is,” Percy said. “She said she’s dating these guys. [LIV] in 2017 [and] they are ready [to] Do Everything So the tour knows that this material has been in development for some time.”
Percy is not a fan of the Saudi-backed league and disagrees with those involved.
The more you go in, the more there are people who don’t care, there are people who have a conscience and don’t care,” Percy said. “It really sums up as ‘They executed 80 people this week, they just got their heads cut off.’ They are not the nicest people in the world.
“You just look at him and say, ‘Well, I’m rich, I don’t care.’ It’s hard, that’s true.”
