Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera will return to Athletic Bilbao on loan from France’s Paris Germain, the two clubs announced on Saturday night.
The Parisian club said the loan would be for one season with an option to buy.
Herrera, 33, previously played for Bilbao from 2011 to 2014 before moving to Manchester United and then the French capital in 2019.
Herrera won the league title twice with Saint-Germain, as well as in the national cup, the League Cup once and the Champions Cup twice, but he failed to find a permanent place in the starting lineup.
He was one of the players considered undesirable by the new sports administration this summer with the arrival of Portuguese football adviser Luis Campos and coach Christophe Galtier.
For his part, Bilbao said: “Herrera is returning to San Mames eight years after leaving the club for Manchester United for 36 million euros.”
With the English team he won the FA Cup in 2016, the League Cup and the Europa League in the 2016-2017 season when he was selected as the best player in the team.
