Lance may not have the potential of Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille, but he has slipped between two great clubs and tied for first place in Ligue 1, where he hopes to take a fifth win in six games when he beats “Rennes” on Sunday.
The red-and-yellow club are dreaming of a return to the first continental competition, the Champions League, after their last appearance in the 2002-2003 season, when they beat AC Milan and drew twice with Bayern Munich in the group stage.
Shortly before, Lens had won his only league title in 1998 and was also runner-up four times.
But the most popular player in the past decade has retreated, spending most of his time in the second division before returning to League 1 in 2020.
He has finished seventh twice and has high hopes this season despite losing a few of his stars.
Lance has been unbeaten in 13 league games since March under coach Frank Eze, who has a modest training career.
– Saint Germain and Marseille for continental training –
Before meeting Lance on Sunday, Marseille will open the stage on Saturday in Auxerre, with Paris Saint-Germain replacing Nantes afterward.
Despite a 4-0 defeat against Saint-Germain in the Champions League (Supercup), cup winners Nantes are looking to repeat last season’s result, when they lost 3-1 to their Parisian guest.
But Saint-Germain started well, especially in terms of scoring, scoring 21 goals in 5 matches. It became the first team in the league to score so many goals since Paris in the 1959–1960 season.
Saint Germain’s showdown with Nantes will set up a heated opening match of his Champions League campaign with invited Juventus on Tuesday, while Marseille will visit Tottenham on Wednesday in a tough match.
