The number one in the world, Daniil Medvedev, was defeated by Nick Kyrgios (25th in the world), in the US Open, fourth and last important of the season, in the round of 16.
The Australian Kyrgios defeated the Russian, leader of the classification ATP and title champion, in four sets, for partials 6-7 (11/13), 6-3, 3-6 and 2-6in a meeting that lasted almost three hours.
Wimbledon runner-up Kyrgios reaches the quarterfinals of the important from New York, where he will face another Russian, Karen Khachanov (31).
The duel with Medvedev was the third between them this season. Kyrgios had also recently beaten Medvedev in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 in Montreal, avenging the Russian’s second-round loss at the Australian Open.
With this defeat, it is certain that Medvedev will lose his place as world number one to Rafael Nadal (3rd), Carlos Alcaraz (4th) or Casper Ruud (5th), all three still in the race.
