On Wednesday, a group of South Carolina lawmakers sent a letter to University of South Carolina athletics director Ray Tanner and women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley demanding clarification after two canceled games at Brigham Young University.
Tanner and Staley canceled future BYU games after a Duke University volleyball player said a fan had repeatedly called him racist nicknames during a game in Utah on August 26.
But members of the South Carolina Freedom Group want to know why the university canceled the BYU games, given the fact that a police investigation found no evidence that the n-word incident took place.
According to Fox News, fourteen members of the legislature signed a letter demanding a reply.
In the letter, Tanner and Staley sought answers to several key questions regarding the alleged BYU n-word incident.
“Given the totality of events, the University of South Carolina, out of respect for the truth, hastened to silence the loudest voice of the far left by literally and figuratively “canceling” BYU. If our citizens are going to trust our government institutions, they should not fall into false anger. “The letter only hurts and weakens those who are truly affected by intolerance and discrimination.”
Lawmakers continue to criticize USC for taking serious steps that are absurd on their part.
“In our opinion, the University acted arbitrarily and capriciously, without considering and considering the facts and circumstances. This raises many questions at first: Why did the University of South Carolina cancel the anti-BYU series when there was no supporting evidence to justify such an action? Will the University of South Carolina delay the BYU meeting and issue a public apology if the allegations continue to be shown to be false?” they wrote.
“At this time, is it the University’s policy to prevent or, more importantly, ignore any fact-finding missions regarding allegations of misconduct?” Lawmakers exclaimed: “When any fan of any university where the Gamecocks are playing in an upcoming game is accused of inappropriate behavior, will the university cancel all sporting events? Does the University of South Carolina take responsibility for all its fans, regardless of whether they have any affiliation with the university? What is the University of South Carolina’s policy to cancel games where allegations of abuse are made by prospective fans of the opposing school? And finally, the University of South Carolina, a member of the Duke fan base, Mrs. Pampin?
Staley announced that he had to cancel BYU games.
“My job as a coach is to do the best for my players and staff,” Staley said last week. “The BYU incident made me reevaluate our home and home, and I don’t think now is the right time for us to be on this drama.”
BYU is still investigating, but after police reviewed audio and video footage of the game and conducted multiple interviews with fans present at the match, no evidence was found. Duke actress Rachel Richardson says she called herself racist nicknames.
