It could have been more historic if Sporting had also secured passage, but it was still a historic campaign for the national teams with Benfica and FC Porto qualifying first in the Champions League group stage. Contrary to what happened last season, in which Benfica and Sporting reached eighth place as runners-up, and as had not happened since 2018/19, when FC Porto finished their group in the lead, Portugal had two top-seeded teams in the round of 16 draw – with the theoretical benefit that this could bring.

Up to the range of options the options were not many between four blocks: the Germans (B. Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt), the Italians (AC Milan and Inter), Liverpool, who had a higher probability of not being able to face four of the eight teams in pot A (Naples, Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea) and the opponents in the groups of their national rival (Club Brugge and PSG). In the end, fate was different, even without the “big beans” in the mix: the Reds will face Roman Yaremchuk’s Club Brugge who thrashed and were thrashed in the groups by FC Porto, while the Blue and Whites will face Inter , former team of Sérgio Conceição at the beginning of the century.
