Scientists at St. Petersburg, Russia is training artificial intelligence to measure blood pressure using a smartphone

Petersburg State Electrotechnical University has trained artificial neural networks to accurately measure blood pressure using a smartphone.

It is based on electrocardiogram (ECG) and photogrammetry (PPG), which are commonly used to diagnose a vascular condition.

The university’s press office said the invention could be set up individually for each user to measure blood pressure at any location.

One of the project owners, Nikita Antipov, was quoted by the university’s press office: “We have developed a system that automatically measures a patient’s blood pressure based on photographic data collected using a sensor that built in the case of a smartphone. These sensors are based on data collected by the Russian company CardioQVARK to operate the system. We developed a series of artificial neural networks, and the device obtained the official patent.

The researchers first set up a database that helped tun the neural network, and then took electrocardiogram (EKG) and photogrammetry (PPG) data from the patient using a smartphone case and the sensor. attached hereto. The researchers made approximately 500 recordings in a variety of conditions, for example, during exercise or at rest. The data contains a lot of noise, so scientists have to work on preprocessing the signals.

Nikita Antipov explained that the device can be adapted to the body parameters of a particular patient. The process does not require much effort and does not take long, it can be done anywhere and anytime, and the system works automatically. The process requires only the phone case and sensor, and information about the measurement results will be displayed on the user’s smartphone screen. The accuracy of blood pressure measurement is approximately 96%.
