The body of the last person missing after landslides and floods in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco was located this Friday, at a time when the rains intensified again and kept that region of the country on alert.

In the midst of incessant rain, which returned with force at dawn this Friday, rescuers found the body of a 43-year-old woman who was the only person who was still missing. raising the death toll from the tragedy, so far, to 128 people.

A rescue dog located the body among the rubble and mud that buried the house where the woman and other people lived in Jardim Monte Verde, a neighborhood in the municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, which is on the border with the city of Recife, the regional capital of Pernambuco.

Most of the victims lived in Jardim Monte Verde, which had several landslides.

The rains in Pernambuco started on May 22, but escalated on May 28when the tragedy occurred in Jardim Monte Verde.

In total, 51 municipalities were affected, most of them in the Recife metropolitan region.

According to the latest count by the regional Civil Defense, Pernambuco adds 9,302 victims, who lost their homes and 111 who are in makeshift shelters: in schools, sports fields and churches in 27 cities, which remain in a state of emergency due to increased rains.

Since Saturday, relief agencies, army, police, ministries and local secretariats have mobilized to assist the survivors of the tragedy and restore public services.

Groups of volunteers were also organized to collect and deliver food and supplies.

Other states, such as Alagoas, Sergipe and Maranhão, located in the northeast of Brazil, also suffer from the rains.

The year 2022 is being especially tragic in Brazil, with thousands of people evacuated and hundreds of victims after strong storms in the states of Bahia, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and now Pernambuco.

In the city of Petrópolis alone, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, an intense storm left around 240 dead last February.

Several experts link these extreme weather events with natural phenomena such as La Niña and the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) that coincided this year.
