UK .. A mass frog burial near Cambridge amazes scientists

Archaeologists near Cambridge have discovered a mass frog burial containing more than 8,000 bones from these amphibians.

The Guardian states that scientists have dated this tomb to the Middle and Late Iron Age (ca.

“We don’t usually find many frogs during excavations in London,” says archaeologist and zoologist Vicki Evans.

And he added, we found all these bones in one hole, which is rare, and they all belong to ordinary frogs.

It has been reported that frogs were considered a symbol of fertility in some ancient civilizations. As in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and the Roman Empire. However, given the age of this case, it is difficult to find an explanation for it.

He added that there were no scratches or signs of fire on the bones, indicating that it was not used for food. But burnt grains were found near the crater, suggesting that locals processed crops eaten by insects and aphids where they were fed by frogs. It is possible that the latter was attracted to this area because of the abundance of food here.

The other option is “The Tragedy of the Prehistoric Frogs”. In the spring, many frogs move in search of more suitable shelters. These frogs may have fallen into a hole that became a trap for them.

According to another hypothesis, these frogs fell victim to a harsh winter because extreme cold killed the hibernating frogs. Perhaps an epidemic ravaged the region and took his life.
