Scientists say the future of cancer treatment may revolve around a Netflix-style algorithm.
To provide personalized movie and series recommendations, the streaming giant collects data about each user’s viewing history.
Artificial intelligence then helps it to determine display patterns such as favorite genres and how often they are viewed. Thinking about how Netflix predicts what you want to watch next, artificial intelligence experts have made predictions of how a cancer will behave.
The tool analyzes thousands of genetic data to look for common “flaws” in tumors.
The co-author of the study at the University of California at San Diego, Dr. Ludmil Alexandrov said: “Cancer is a complex disease. But we have shown that there are striking similarities in the changes that take place in chromosomes when they start and how they grow. Whichever you choose, we think we can predict how your cancer will behave. “
He added that this could allow clinicians to “deliver better and more personalized cancer treatment in the future.”
The NHS plans to customize cancer care and offer genome sequencing to patients if it will help improve their care.
Researchers have previously studied how genetic defects occur in sarcoma, a rare cancer that develops in body tissues. And they want to find ways to study these changes in different types of cancer.
All cancers are caused by DNA mutations within cells, which cause cells to multiply uncontrollably until they form a tumor.
The algorithm can filter thousands of lines of genetic data from cancer cells and select common patterns.
This should be allowed in theory to predict how the cancer will develop and where its weaknesses will lie.
He has tested the tool on nearly 10,000 patients with 33 different types of cancer and identified 21 common defects. The results were published in the journal Nature.
They made their software available to other scientists in the hopes they could use it “to create their own Netflix-style library of chromosomal changes.”
