Portalegre farmers concerned about lack of animal supplements due to drought

The farmers of Portalegre today expressed their concern about the lack of supplements to provide their animals due to the drought and the “madness” of the effects of the war in Ukraine and fuel prices.

Animal feed productions “were much smaller”, and therefore “we have to buy supplements”, only that “Buying, between the drought, the war and the price of fuel, is crazyit is a complicated situation”, warned an industry leader.

Speaking to the Lusa agency, the vice president of the Portalegre District Farmers Association (AADP), Francisco Corado, argued that the scene is “bad”.

The rancher also warned that, in addition to the war, the price of fuel and the increase in production costs, “there is also the speculation factor” that is currently being experienced in the market.

“The scenario will get worse, from now on it will always be worse. I would normally only start supplementing the animals in late August, early September, but now I will supplement in June,” she said.

Francisco Folgado also estimated that there could be losses in crops, especially in rainfed crops “between 30 and 40%” of production.

With the reduction of forage production on his farm due to the drought, Francisco Corado exemplified that he will have to “spend faster and more” supplements available to feed the animals.

“Everything goes backwards. In the case of my farm, I normally have 100 days of supplementation and, this year, I will have 150. When I produce less, I will be forced to buy much more and at much higher prices,” he laments.

Regarding the animal watering hole, the vice president of the AADP considered that, at this time, the situation is not yet very worrying, but within “15 days to a month” the situation will be more alarming, due to the lack of rain and stored water. .
