More than 60 national and foreign organizations (environmental and political) signed a manifesto demanding the prohibition of new oil and gas exploration offshore and the end of exemptions and subsidies for harmful fishing and fossil fuels.
The initiative is announced three days before the start of the 2nd UN Ocean Conference, which takes place in Lisbon between Monday and Friday under the co-organization of Portugal and Kenya.
The same organizations, mostly environmentalists, called for the Blue March for Climate on Wednesday, at the Parque das Naçõesfrom the Gare do Oriente to the Altice Arena, venue of the conference.
The manifesto, whose content was made public this Friday in a statement, also calls for the prohibition of bottom trawling and “other industrial and destructive fishing gear in marine protected areas”, the recovery of “collapsed” marine ecosystems or overexploited” and in “habitats sensitive areas”, such as coral reefs or seagrass beds.
the subscribers call to “respect scientific advice in the establishment of fisheries management measures”a “legally binding moratorium on deep sea mining in territorial and international waters” and a global network of marine protected areas that effectively safeguard at least 30% of the world’s seas and coastal areas by 2030.
The organizations are also calling for the adoption of an “ambitious UN plastic pollution treaty that regulates and reduces plastic pollution throughout the life cycle” and a high seas treaty at the next UN negotiating session.
The list of national subscribers includes the parties Bloco de Esquerda, Livre, PAN – People Animals Nature and Socialist Alternative Movement and the youth structure of the PS, the Socialist Youth.
