Erosion, extraction and the sand that goes and does not come back

We got used to the winter ritual: the same sea that filled Pescadores beach with sand, uncovered more and more of the rocks of Praia do Sul. Later, the sand had to be removed from one side, so that the boats could go out to sea, and put sand from the other, so that bathers could enjoy the summer. The sand that comes and goes depending on the season, the currents and human intervention, is a phenomenon on the beaches of Ericeira, but it is not exclusive, it occurs on many other beaches in the country.

“Sediment transport occurs perpendicular to the coast,” says Ruwan Sampath, from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Lisbon. In winter, rough seas and larger waves increase beach erosion and carry sand into coastal deposits. Then, the calmer waves of summer return the sand to the beach, explains the Dunes – o Mar project researcher, to Areia e as Gentes. Or so it should be.
