Apple has announced a new security feature that will be added to new versions of operating systems for the phones and computers that make them, providing an additional firewall against advanced hacking attempts.

The feature aims to protect users who “may be personal targets using sophisticated technologies, such as those developed by state -backed private spyware companies” such as Israel’s NSO.

Called Lockdown, this feature will be available this fall on iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura.

The additional “Lockdown” mode provides the highest level of security; Enabling it will strengthen device protection and limit certain functions, significantly reducing the vulnerabilities that spyware can take advantage of.

The main restrictions that this scenario will impose are:

Messages. Most message attachment types except pictures will be blocked. Some features, such as link previews, will be disabled.

Web Browsing: Some complex web technologies such as JavaScript JIT compilation will be disabled unless the user excludes the trusted site.

Apple Services: Incoming calls and service requests, including FaceTime calls, will be blocked unless the user initiates a call or request.

Wired connections to a computer or accessory will be blocked when the iPhone is locked.

At the same time, Apple also shared details of a $ 10 million cybersecurity grant to support civil society organizations conducting research into spyware threats.
