A young British woman has died after being bitten by an insect in Belgium, a sting that may have been the source of an infection that spread to the brain, Sky News and other British media reported. The death occurred in 2021 and this Wednesday the result of the investigation was known.
Oriana Pepper, 21, was stung next to her right eye, which was swollen from an infection. The young woman received hospital care and was prescribed antibiotics to treat the infection. Two days later she was taken back to the hospital, she was delirious, she had difficulty speaking and collapsed. She died after three days in the hospital, on July 12, 2021.
I’ve never seen a case like this before,” Suffolk Senior Medical Examiner Nigel Parsley said.
The result of the autopsy was known this Wednesday, at the hearing related to the investigation into the death of the young woman. Suffolk County Medical Examiner Nigel Parsley reported that “the infection [com a bactéria Staphylococcus aureus] got into Oriana’s skin after being stung by an insect.” “Later, [a infeção] traveled to the carotid artery in the neck, leading to a septic embolism [causada por infeção] in the brain,” he concluded.
Oriana Pepper was in Antwerp, Belgium with her boyfriend as part of training to become a pilot for an EasyJet commercial airline. Since they arrived in Antwerp on May 20, they have been bitten several times without any reaction, the boyfriend was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail. Locals had assured them it was normal for this time of year.
