Silicon Valley collapses: Google suspends hiring for two weeks

Google announced a two-week hiring freeze at the company, following a recent memo telling its employees that the hiring process will slow down for the rest of the year. The company-wide consensus urged workers to be “more energetic” and to work with “more hunger.”

TechCrunch reports that Google has announced that the company is implementing a two-week hiring moratorium. The news comes after Google announced last week that it will slow down the hiring process for the rest of the year to review its hiring methods and practices.

Google reportedly hired around 10,000 people in the second quarter alone, and full quarter results will be announced on July 26. In an email received by The Information, Prabhakar Raghavan, senior vice president of Google, said: “We are using this time to review our staff. Agree on a new set of priority staffing requests for the next three months.

A hiring freeze will not affect Google’s previous offers, but will temporarily halt contract renewals. Google’s decision appears to be in line with an internal memo sent by CEO Sundar Pichai last week in which he said the company wanted to be “more entrepreneurial” and reorganized employee priorities to focus on the most important projects at the company.

“As Sundar explained, we are slowing hiring until the end of the year. Accordingly, we’ve suspended most new offers for two weeks so teams can prioritize their roles and receive plans for the rest of the year, a Google spokesperson told TechCrunch via email.

Other tech companies are also slowing the hiring process: Facebook (now Meta) has suspended hiring for some engineering teams and is announcing layoffs at the company. CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants employees to have fewer available resources and work harder at the company.
