The Center for Media Studies has published the results of a study on secondary censorship, which are those who are censored because they are not denied access to the content they seek. The study found that 144 million times users were censored by conservative numbers alone, with that staggering number occurring in just the first three months of 2022.
The MRC defines secondary censorship as “the number of times social media users have information hidden from them.” That is, every subscriber of a censored account is censored.

MRC Free Speech America tracks the effects of secondhand censorship using our one-of-a-kind CensorTrack database. On seven major tech platforms – Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and Spotify – MRC Free Speech America has total signups .
MRC calculates the impact of secondary censorship by adding the number of followers each account has during each censorship recorded in the second quarter.
The second censorship impact for the first quarter of 2022 includes only censors that we identify or are aware of. As such, it represents only a small part of the overall scope of second-hand censorship.
The report also states, “The lack of transparency at Big Tech means that there are countless censorships happening every day – more than is shown in this report.”
Examples cited by the MRC include secondhand censorship of Donald Trump’s 90 million Twitter followers. Given the fact that Trump tweets an average of 18 times a day, that equates to about 1,620,000,000 cases of secondhand censorship per day.
Another example given is deleting 70 episodes of Spotify. The Joe Rogan Experience digital audio file. That’s 770 million instances of secondary censorship, as Rogan averaged 11 million listeners per episode.
