Simplicity Sprint: Google CEO Sundar Pichai wants more productivity and efficiency

Last week, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced to his employees that a new initiative called “Simplicity Sprint” will seek ideas from more than 174,000 employees that the company can focus on to improve efficiency and productivity. It came just weeks after the Masters of the Universe told the staff to work “with a great thirst”.

CNBC reports that Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently announced a new corporate initiative called the “Simplicity Sprint,” which aims to improve company performance and employee focus in times of uncertainty and risk in the economy.

The project was announced at the company’s regular general meeting last week, and the tone of the announcement seemed urgent as employees asked about layoffs and slow hiring. Pichai asked staff to provide input based on existing and relevant internal documents.

Referring to Google’s second-quarter earnings report released Tuesday, Pichai said, “I wanted to provide some additional context to our earnings results and also ask for your help.” Said. “It is clear that we face a challenging macro environment and more uncertainty ahead.”

Pichai added: “There are real concerns that our overall productivity is not commensurate with the size of our current workforce.” Pichai said he wants his employees to help “create a culture that is more focused on the mission, more focused on our products, more focused on the customer.” We need to think about how to reduce distractions and really raise the bar for both product quality and productivity.”

Google reported weaker-than-expected revenues and earnings in its latest earnings report. Revenue growth fell from 62 percent last year to 13 percent this quarter. CFO Ruth Porat said he expects the company to continue to face challenges in the near future, but there is currently no official guidance.

Pichai introduced the crowdsourced “Simplicity Sprint” program for faster product development ideas. Pichai said the company gives its employees the opportunity to share their opinions through an internal survey and can contact management if they have further questions.

Survey questions include: “What will help you work with greater clarity and efficiency to serve our users and customers? Where should we remove the speed bumps to get better results faster? How can we eliminate waste and stay entrepreneurial and focused as we grow?”

In July, Breitbart News reported that Pichai had previously told employees to work “harder”.

In a letter to all employees, Pichai wrote:

Due to hiring progress this year, we will slow the pace of hiring until the end of the year, while maintaining our most important skills. For the balance of 2022 and 2023, we will focus our recruitment process on engineering, technical and other high-value positions and ensure that the exceptional talent we recruit is aligned with our long-term priorities.

As we move forward, we need to be more adventurous, working with more urgency, sharper concentration, and more hunger than we show on sunnier days. In some cases, this means consolidation, where investments overlap and streamline processes. In other cases, this means stopping development and reallocating resources to higher priority areas. It’s all in our hands to make the company better – we’ll create more ways for you all to get involved and share helpful ideas, so stay tuned.

Scarcity clarifies something we’ve been talking about since the early days of Google. It encourages concentration and creativity, which ultimately leads to better products that help people around the world. Now we have this opportunity and I am happy to seize the moment again.
