Health problems may explain higher mortality

EITHER Impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the quality of health services and access to these may even be contributing to the excess mortality that Portugal has registered in recent months, the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) admits to the Observer.

Ana Paula Rodrigues, a public health doctor at the INSA epidemiology department, attributes the excess mortality observed in Portugal in recent months —that is, the difference between expected and observed mortality— the high incidence of Covid-19 and, in recent weeks, the extreme heat.

According to the INSA doctor, “there will be other factors that will contribute” to excess mortality, these factors “may have worsened during the pandemic period” and that include “socioeconomic factors, access and quality of health services, risk behaviors and chronic diseases.
