Rechargeable electricity with hydrogen cartridges.

Toyota has always invested more in electric vehicles with onboard energy production, since fuel cells hydrogen (H2), than in solutions that store energy in batteries. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Japanese giant’s latest invention has to do specifically with hydrogen. One of the advantages of hydrogen fuel cells has to do with the faster supply of hydrogen compared to battery charging, and the Japanese manufacturer appears to have found a way to speed up H2 charging even further.

Fueling a vehicle with hydrogen is quick, since about 6 kg of H2 can be loaded in three or four minutes, which guarantees a range of approximately 600 km in an average vehicle. But the recharging points are very expensive, since to function in ideal conditions they must have a hydrogen production station next to them from the electrolysis of water and with energy generated from renewable sources. Furthermore, H2 is supplied at 700 bar, a very high pressure that helps explain costs exceeding one million euros for a small capacity station (200 kg of H2/day), which is why this type of station is not abundant in Europe. and if. non-existent in Portugal.

To alleviate this fact, Toyota presented its latest creation for hydrogen recharging. It is a small portable container shaped like a cartridge, whose H2 can be used to fuel a vehicle fuel celllike the Mirai, to power a weekend house or cook on a stove that Toyota developed with the manufacturer Rimini, specialized in this type of camping utensils. The Japanese manufacturer does not specify the amount of H2 stored in the container, the pressure at which it is located, or its temperature. However, the safety instructions on the packaging advise against dropping it and, if this happens, not using it.
