Brazil’s Supreme Court rejects Bolsonaro’s appeal to recover his passport

The former Brazilian president’s passport was withdrawn due to suspicions of being involved in the attacks of January 8, 2023. Bolsonaro will also continue to be prevented from contacting other people under investigation.

This Tuesday, the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil rejected the appeal of former President Jair Bolsonaro to recover his passport, withdrawn within the framework of the process investigating his alleged participation in the attacks of January 8, 2023.

In addition to rejecting the return of the passport, the Supreme Court maintained the prohibition of Bolsonaro from contacting the others involved.

The decision was made unanimously, after the judge responsible for the case, Alexandre de Moraes, stated that keeping his passport would prevent him from leaving the country while investigations continue into Bolsonaro’s role as the mastermind behind the attacks on institutions in Brasilia in 2023.

During the trial, the judge argued that “It has already been proven” that the suspects tried to leave the country, attemptsHe stressed that it can continue as the investigations deepen.

Alexandre de Moraes also highlighted that the Federal Police has important evidence that those investigated, who are under precautionary measures, participated in a plan to carry out a coup d’état, “which was not consummated due to circumstances beyond their control,” according to the Brazilian news portal G1.

Precautionary measures also include ban on Bolsonaro from contacting other people under investigation, including the head of the National Party (PL), Valdemar Costa Neto, and his former Minister of Defense, Walter Braga Netto.

The Federal Police is expected to present its conclusions on the case in early November.

According to the investigation, Bolsonaro and his inner circle prepared the so-called “coup project”, which defined the measures to be taken in the event of an electoral defeat in the 2022 presidential elections.

The report also plans an investigation into digital militias, which allegedly encouraged tens of thousands of supporters to take to the streets to protest the election results and then led to attacks on Congress and the Supreme Court.

Pending the scope of this possible accusation, Bolsonaro is already disqualified at least until 2030, after the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) declared him guilty of attacking democracy, after having organized a meeting at the official residence in which He questioned, without evidence, the credibility of the Brazilian electoral system, before dozens of foreign ambassadors and diplomats.
